TOKYO When Masayuki Hattori, 41, goes to the races, he likes to hang out in the paddock area to study the horses - their coats, their build and how much they sweat, among other things. "Then, I see the way the rider settles on the horse," he said, explaining the delicate factors that influence his bets.
So when Japan's racing association allowed bets to be placed via mobile phone last year, the service seemed heaven-sent to people like Hattori.
Using the phone lets Hattori keep his strategic location near the paddock. "I won't lose the spot I secured every time I run to the ticket counter before a new race starts," he said. "And the ticket booth becomes really crowded right before the race."
